All software programmes, web browsers, applications and operating systems are vulnerable to attack, which is why developers regularly release patches and updates. It is very important that you install updates as soon as they become available to ensure the security of your data and to protect the UCT network from attack.

UCT provides an automatic update service for Windows, Apple Mac and Linux machines. Once you subscribe to the applicable service you will automatically receive critical security patches and software updates.

Secure your operating system

Windows

WSUS (Windows Server Update Service) is a service that enables the automatic deployment of the latest Microsoft product updates (security patches) to your Windows operating system at UCT. WSUS supports updates for Windows, Office, SQL Server and Exchange. If your computer was purchased via ICTS using a fund, then WSUS will already be installed. If you are using your own computer, you can either choose to install WSUS (recommended if you will be logged on the UCT network more often than at home) or stick with Windows updates from Microsoft (if you will be using the computer more at home than on campus)

Follow the instructions to install UCT's automatic Windows System Update Service (WSUS).

  • Once installed, the update service will regularly prompt you to accept operating system updates and patches.
  • If you're working remotely, please ensure that you connect to the UCT VPN at least once a month to stay updated. This also keeps your UCT Windows licence active.
  • Always accept the software updates that are offered to you and reboot your computer when prompted.

Apple Mac

ICTS hosts an Apple Software Update Server, which helps ensure that your Apple computer is automatically kept up to date with all the latest Apple software and Mac OS X updates. You'll need to connect your Software Update program to the UCT server to use this service. This involves configuring your Apple desktop using the Apple Updater tool. If you received your computer from UCT, the Apple Updater will already be installed. If you are using your own computer, you can either choose to install the Apple Updater (recommended if you will be logged on the UCT network more often than at home) or stick with updates from Apple (if you will be using the computer more at home than on campus).

Follow the instructions to install Apple's Software Update service. Once installed, the update service will regularly prompt you to accept operating system updates and patches.

  • You must always accept the software updates that are offered to you and reboot your computer when prompted.

Linux

ZENworks Linux Management (ZLM) ensures that your SLED 10 machine is automatically kept up to date with all the latest software and patch updates. A key is used to assign the default policies and package groups to a specific client system that has been registered with the ZLM server.

Connect to ZENworks Linux Management by following the instructions to install the ZENworks Linux Management service.

  • Once installed, the update service will regularly prompt you to accept operating system updates and patches.
  • You must always accept the software updates that are offered to you and reboot your computer when prompted.
